Wyndham Hill-Smith

Our Visionary

The late Wyndham Hill Smith (or Wyndy as he was known to mates) had a tenacious spirit from day dot. In his early days it served him well on the competitive cricket field, and later after the death of his father Walter and winemaker brother Sidney (both Yalumba royalty), when he took the reins at Yalumba. Wyndham is the reason Oxford Landing exists today. He and viticulturist Norman Hanckel scoured the land for the perfect soil in which to plant vines and found it in the Riverland. Wyndham’s passion, belief in the region, and downright hard work turned a patch of red soil into the successful vineyard and wine brand it is today.

Robert Hill-Smith

Chairman

Yalumba’s former chief executive officer (now chairman) spent more than 30 years building Yalumba into the globally renowned, modern wine company it is today. Robert was always a bit of a go-getter. As a nipper he fancied the idea of life as a pro footballer or cricketer but in reality, lived and breathed wine. He recalls accompanying his late father Wyndham Hill-Smith to the Riverland when he was just seven. Back then, his father was plotting the vineyard that would one day provide fruit for Oxford Landing wines. Casting a visionary eye over the wine landscape is something Robert made a career out of. He is a marketing guru, recipient of the prestigious 2019 Maurice O'Shea Award, and the former Chair of Australia’s First Families of Wine. When Robert is not at the winery, he can be found with his wife Annabel and daughters Jess, Lucy and Georgia – the sixth generation in Yalumba’s long family history.

Andrew la Nauze

Winemaker

As life stories go, Andy La Nauze’s is full of interesting chapters. After growing up in the Barossa Valley, he embarked on a career as a radiographer but eventually yearned for more creativity. “I like science. I like wine, so I put the two together,” he says. A Bachelor of Agricultural Science (majoring on Oenology) at the University of Adelaide led him to winemaking career that spans South Australia and the globe. In July 2004 he officially joined the Yalumba red winemaking team with Peter Gambetta and Kevin ‘KG’ Glastonbury. Andrew took on his winemaking role with Oxford Landing in 2012 and mostly works with the range of whites. In the winery it’s about doing less to highlight the fruit characters more. When he’s not making great white wine, Andy is usually focussed on expanding his palate and tuning his guitar (he’s quite the skilled musician).

Matt Zadow

Winemaker

Matt Zadow grew up in Blanchetown, went to Waikerie High School and has many-a childhood memory of camping and skiing on the Murray River. He is a handy man to have around. The first 17 years of his career were spent in commercial electronic repair and sales. He’s still a deft hand with electronics but it turned out he also had a knack for winemaking. His family had sold grapes to Yalumba since 1962, so it was always on the peripheral. After completing a Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences (Oenology) degree at the University of Adelaide, Matt graduated as Dux in 2005, and was awarded the Gramp Hardy Smith Memorial Prize. Bravo. At the beginning of vintage 2011, he was offered the position of red winemaker at Oxford Landing Estates. He now lives in Nuriootpa (just six minutes away from the winery).

Glynn Muster

Vineyard Manager

Glynn Muster (or Mus as he’s known to mates) is a born and bred Waikerie local. After studying to be a teacher, grapes won him over and he returned home to work amongst the vines. He was 23 when Oxford Landing approached him about a job in 1997 and hasn’t looked back since. He was appointed Oxford Landing Estate’s Vineyard Manager in 2013. In his time at Oxford Landing, the vineyard transformed from an old-style vineyard to a modern, state of the art vineyard. “I love being in the vineyards. it’s amazing to work alongside people I've known for years,” he says. “We all have each other’s backs in and outside of work.”
